Intermittent fasting and weight loss


What is intermittent fasting ?


Intermittent fasting is seen more as a way of life than a diet in itself. It consists of a cycle where periods of fasting and eating alternate.


There are three types of intermittent fasting :


  • Alternative fasting, which consists in fasting for 24 hours, once or several times a week.

  • Modified fasting (5:2 or 4:3), which consists of eating as usual 4 or 5 days a week, then ingesting only 25% of your daily calories for the remaining days.

  • Time-limited fasting (16:8 or 20:4), which is the most popular form of intermittent fasting nowadays. It involves eating for a limited period of time each day, usually ranging from 4 to 8 hours. That means you can eat your three meals between 10:00 and 18:00, for example.


Why fast ?


Practicing intermittent fasting can provide several benefits, including lowering insulin and cholesterol levels and, of course, weight loss.


However, studies done on this lifestyle show that intermittent fasting is no more or less effective than simple caloric restriction (eating less). It is up to you to decide whether or not this practice is right for you. It may be easier for some people to control their food intake within a limited time frame, rather than by counting calories, for example. One thing is for sure, it's not for everyone.


Intermittent fasting must be practiced over the long term. It is not a miracle diet. Try to think of yourself as an athlete training for the Olympics : the results will require a lot of time and effort. It's not a sprint, but rather a marathon.


Before you start


First and foremost, consult a health professional or a nutritionist. They will be able to guide you through this transition. There are different types of metabolisms and yours may not be adapted to this practice. It is important to listen to your body throughout the process and not be afraid to admit that this lifestyle is not for you. We will help you find the right solution to reach your goals !
